This painting entitled Foncé was inspired by the legend of 'Secret School' according to which the Ottoman Empire prohibited the education of enslaved Greeks during the period of Turkish rule, in order to ensure their ignorance and thus their servitude. As a result, secret night schools were organized by priests, where they secretly taught writing and reading."
